In 1935, a Chinese woman by the name of Shi Jianqiao murdered the notorious warlord Sun Chuanfang as he prayed in a Buddhist temple. This riveting work of history examines this well-publicized crime and the highly sensationalized trial of the killer. In a fascinating investigation of the media, political, and judicial records surrounding this cause célèbre, Eugenia Lean shows how Shi Jianqiao planned not only to avenge the death of her father, but also to attract media attention and galvanize public support. Eugenia Lean 一直对近代中国女性犯罪所引发的公众同情给予密切的关注。2003年10月22—24日在北京大学召开的“北京：都市想像与文化记忆”国际学术研讨会，Eugenia Lean 提交了题为Love with a Vengeance: Media Sensation in Republican Era Beiping《刘景桂情杀案——三十年代北平的大众文化与媒体炒作》的论文，摘要如下：
1935年3月16日，北华艺术学院的一位22岁女学生刘景桂闯入北京一所女子中学的教职员宿舍，枪杀了一位女性体育教员，滕爽—她的情敌。她用一支伯朗宁手枪对滕爽连开七抢。滕当场死亡。事发后，刘在企图由邻近胡同逃逸时被捕。1935年4月23日，开始审判。经过数次上诉，最后在1937年5月5日被判无期徒刑。刘景桂枪杀滕爽出于嫉妒。她们两人同时爱上一位34岁男性职业运动员，逯明。这件发生在北京的事件引起社会大众极大的议论。这个被视为桃色情杀案及其牵涉的三角恋爱特别引起媒体广泛的注意。在检视跟这事件有关的公众讨论后，我认为这桩发生在北京的事件，为北京市民，甚至天津，上海，广州等地的居民都提供了一个探讨中国现代化的核心议题的机会。这些议题包含“现代”的感情，如爱情的民族价值，公众同情在法律案件中所扮演的角色，媒体对社会日渐增长的影响力以及女性在中国都市里公开行动的尺度等。当时的学术界的想法认为只有上海发生的事件才会引起这些有关新女性，大众媒体及中国现代化的辩论。因此这个北平案件及它牵涉的议题的讨论会对一般学术界的想法是一种挑战。

忽然想起寒假前Melsfinn借给我的《宣传与公共意识》([美]诺姆·乔姆斯基、戴维·巴萨米安著，上海译文出版社，2006年4月)，似乎议题很相近啊，可惜我还没有翻过几页，要被某人取笑了。
